Storms Create Mess For Some In Westmoreland Co.

HEMPFIELD TWP. (KDKA) ― Westmoreland County public safety officials have declared a state of emergency because of Wednesday night's storms.

They say they have clean-up under control for now, but are worried that if more severe weather moves into the area they will need the additional resources to help the hardest hit areas.

The hardest hit areas are in the western part of the county.

Hempfield Township, Jeannette, Penn Township and North Huntingdon Township are all reporting major damage.

At a fruit market in Hempfield, four feet of water in the parking lot caused some cement to buckle.

At a nearby junkyard on Route 130, an overflowing creek caused a flatbed truck to fall into the creek. Now, officials are trying to keep more vehicles from falling into the water.

No shelters are currently set-up, but the Red Cross is providing emergency kits at the Hempfield Township building on Route 136 and the Penn Township Lutheran Church on Harrison Avenue.
