Crews Working To Fix Sinkhole In Irwin Parking Lot

IRWIN (KDKA) ― Crews in Westmoreland County are working to repair a large sinkhole that opened up in the parking lot of a popular shopping center over the weekend.

Part of the parking lot at the Norwin Hills Shopping Center caved in when the storm drains under the lot collapsed under the pressure of last week's heavy rains.

The gaping hole has been getting wider since Sunday.

"The hole itself is about 10-feet deep and the pipe itself is about another 25-feet underneath that," Engineer Ken Orie told KDKA.

"What we have to do first is understand exactly what happened in the pipe," Orie added.  To see what's going on deep below the surface, crews are using a robotic camera.

Officials, however, say the shopping center will remain open while crews work to repair the problem.
