A Westmoreland County landmark is being torn down this week to make way for new development.
Demolition began earlier this week on the Mountain View Inn. On Wednesday, people stopped to take pictures and glanced at the inn while driving along Route 30.
The inn once hosted presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy.
Demolition crews began plowing through the 85-year-old hotel and conference center on Monday. They are getting the prominent Route 30 property ready for new development.
Two brothers from Upper Saint Clair purchased the hotel in August and are tearing down the old part of the inn to make way for an upscale shopping center.
They hope it will eventually bring around $200,000 in tax revenue to the surrounding community.
The center will be called The Shops at Mountain View Village. It will include a locally-owned upscale restaurant, which will feature outdoor dining. It will also include a bank, shops and 50,000-square feet of office space.
The 53-room addition to the inn will reopen as The Inn at Mountain View Village.
The landmark tower that sat on top of the inn will be preserved and used in the new development.
Mountain View Inn closed in January after the former owners fell behind on a $5 million loan.
Demolition should be complete in about two weeks.
If all goes according to plan, construction of the new Mountain View Village is expected to get underway in the spring.
