Jeannette Schools To Enforce Uniform Policy

JEANNETTE (KDKA) ― Beginning on Monday, a Westmoreland County School District will enforce a uniform policy for its students.

The measure was passed 5-3 by the Jeanette School Board back in July.

The superintendent says it's not a uniform, but rather a "standard attire" so students won't feel pressure to wear name brand clothing.

More than 20 percent of public schools nationwide now require uniforms, but Jeanette will be the first in Westmoreland County to do so.

School officials expect other districts to follow.

Here's a look at the guidelines:

- Tops must be blue, red or white polos, turtlenecks, sweaters or dress shirts.

- Bottoms must be khaki or navy blue dress pants or skirts.

- Dress shoes, boots or sneakers must be worn on the feet.

- Socks are required.

Jeans, cargo pants, sweatpants or any low-riding pants are prohibited. Sandals, flip flops and slippers are also prohibited.

Most students seem to be taking the policy in stride, but some seemed less happy than others.

The school board president says this is about the kids and what's best for them.

She says the board wants the kids to get the best education possible, and they think this will help to make that happen.
