Local Man Dies After Mobile Home Accident

HEMPFIELD TWP. (KDKA) ― A man who was trapped under a mobile home in Hempfield Township has died.

The accident happened in the 100 block of Cardinal Drive.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office says James Skovira, 48, of Acme, died from asphyxiation due to compression injuries of the chest.

Skovira was putting axles under the trailer prior to moving it. It appears a jack or a cement block beneath the 12- by 60-ft. trailer may have given way prior to the collapse.

"His whole body was underneath. We knew he was pinned. We couldn't just pull him out, we had to lift the mobile home back off of him," High Park Volunteer Fire Chief John Howell said. "We used high-pressure airbags to do that."

The mobile home was located in Hempfield Highlands and Suburban Acres. The park property manager says this was the first accident of its kind that has happened there.

Skovira was found by his son.  He unsuccessfully tried reaching his father on his cell phone. He drove to the site and found his father beneath the mobile home.

The coroner estimates Skovira may have been pinned for an hour and a half before his son found him.

"The contractor has a scrap yard that he takes the homes to and dismantles them there onsite so that's what he was here doing – preparing it to be removed out of the park," Debbie Maser, property manager, said.
