Just two weeks after a mother and son were killed on the railroad tracks in Derry, a new fence has been installed to keep it from happening again.
On October 30, 37-year-old Sheila Singer and her 2-year-old son John Smart were killed after being hit by a train on their way home from the grocery store.
On Friday, a 57-foot piece of fence was installed to block off one of the main places where people cross the tracks illegally. A fence had been there before but was cut down.
Derry Police Chief Randy Glick got the ball rolling on the project by contacting Dave Bollinger of Dave's Construction in Derry Township.
Bollinger then contacted others to donate the needed supplies. Penn Fencing in Indiana County donated the fencing, J.B.L. Contracting in Latrbe donated machinery to dig holes and Ligonier Stone & Lime Concrete Co. donated concrete.
Glick witnessed the fatal train accident and said he wants to do anything possible to keep it from happening again.
He says a big part of the solution is for people to take responsibility for themselves and simply not cross the tracks illegally.
Derry Mayor Susan Bortz says she was moved by the community effort that went into building the fence. She says she is now working with PennDOT to make improvements to the current bridge and to establish a pedestrian bridge among other improvements.
Bortz says Bethel Park High School donated some used fencing that will be used elsewhere.
Anyone with time or materials to donate is asked to contact the Derry Borough Municipal Building.
