Suspect To Stand Trial In Murder Of Ligonier Man

(KDKA) An 18-year-old man is headed to trial on charges in the murder of a prominent Ligonier businessman.

Anthony Mowry is accused of beating and stabbing 75-year-old Mike Jones in his Ligonier home back on September 17, then setting the residence on fire.

At a preliminary hearing today, the prosecution played a taped confession in which Mowry detailed the alleged murder.

In the confession, officials say Mowry told detectives that he was walking by Jones' home when he saw Jones look at him through a window. He said he went to the door and Jones offered him a drink.

According to Mowry's taped confession: "I decided that I was gonna go in there and have this drink and that I was just gonna beat him up. I couldn't think of any way to get him out of the room with all the windows in it, so I had to kinda consent to a sexual act. During that act he did something that really angered me, so I started punching him in his face..."

Mowry went on in the confession to detail Jones' death and where he went in the hours after.

Mowry's attorney says he takes issue with the way the confession was obtained because detectives had a previous conversation with Mowry that wasn't recorded.

In the confession, officials say Mowry also told detectives that he had known Jones since he was 14- or 15-years-old and had gotten into confrontations with him in the past.

Mowry was arrested two days after the incident in Ft. Hood, Texas.

He is charged with murder, robbery, arson and theft.

District Judge Denise Thiel today held those charges for court.
