Cupertino web security company Symantec released a list of the top web searches kids make, and age-old curiosity about sex isn't far from the top of the list.
Symantec uses their family safety service OnlineFamily.Norton to track 3.5 million searches by kids between February and July. Internet giants YouTube, Google, and Facebook ranked one, two, and three on the list. At number four, "sex," followed by "MySpace" at number five, and "porn" at number six.
The Top 10:
1. YouTube
2. Google
3. Facebook
4. Sex
5. MySpace
6. Porn
7. Yahoo
8. Michael Jackson
9. Fred
10. eBay
The name many adults might not recognize is "Fred" at number nine. The fictional Fred Figglehorn is a children's favorite on YouTube. His comedy videos include "Fred Gets Dissed at Bible School" and "Fred Sees A Therapist."
Symantec internet safety advocate Marian Merritt wasn't all that surprised to see "sex" and "porn" in the top ten.
She told CNET, "You go down farther in the list, you see words of anatomy like 'boobs,' it almost makes you laugh because we remember what it was like to be a preteen or teen. Parents don't often have context around this sort of thing."
Merritt added that understanding what is typical among children can be reassuring.
"If you saw that your child is looking up porn, and you became very upset, this might show you that actually it's a very common thing for kids to be doing," she said. "And you should be reassured that there's nothing really wrong with your child. Rather, this should be an opportunity for a teachable moment."
Parents use OnlineFamily.Norton to monitor children's web use. Symantec said it tracks a child's activity and time spent online. Parents can log into a personal account from an internet device to check activity.
Symantec has also posted a list of the Top 100 child searches.
