Crowds Line Up To For Whiff Of Corpse Flower

SAN MARINO, Calif. (AP) ― Long lines of people are eagerly awaiting a glimpse -- and a whiff -- of an Indonesian flower famous for its rotting flesh odor at The Huntington Library in San Marino.

Library spokeswoman Lisa Blackburn says thousands of people saw the rare flower since it started blooming Wednesday afternoon. She says the flower was already starting to close its frilly cup and lose its strong stench Thursday afternoon.

The plant's spike grew from about 4 feet tall last week to a towering 6 feet 9 inches. It was propagated from a seed from another corpse flower that bloomed at the Huntington in 1999.

The endangered plant is native to the rain forests on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where habitat loss has taken a toll on the flower in the wild.
