WASHINGTON, PA (KDKA) ― Dozens gathered inside the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies this morning to pay tribute to our nation's veterans.

Thousands of local veterans who were killed in action are buried at the cemetery in Washington County.

Veteran John Gretz attended today's ceremony.

Gretz, who served as a field mapper in Vietnam, says ceremonies like today's always make him emotional.

"It's very important, I think, for those that have done it - they look back on it with pride. They were able to go and do their part," said Gretz. "Brings back a lot of memories, just looking back on it, you know, how the years have gone, and I'm here, and so many of them are not."

Another veteran at the ceremony, Al Nerone, was a weather observer during World War II.

Nerone said being 90-years-old and being able to celebrate Veterans Day again puts things into perspective for him.

"I lost several of my boyhood buddies in combat; probably half a dozen of them who never came back, and always think of them."

The cemetery serves more than 300,000 veterans in the area.
