Bold Robber Hits Post Office In Langeloth

SMITH TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― State and local police and federal postal inspectors are on the lookout for a bold robber who held up the Post Office in the small town of Langeloth, in Smith Township, Washington County this morning.

Smith Township Police Chief Winford LaRue says the robber, wearing a ski mask, barged into the Post Office around 10 a.m. demanding money.

"The post master thought the individual was joking until he showed her some type of weapon," said LaRue. LaRue says the robber then jumped the counter, locked the postmaster in a closet and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Customer Bill Buxton walked in a few moments later. "I didn't see anyone but I heard someone say help me help me. She banged on the door." Buxton says another customer came in, climbed over the counter and unlocked the door.

"And there come Peg out and she said, 'I've been robbed. The guy had a mask and a gun,' " said Buxton.

Police describe the robber as a white man, 6'1" tall, 200 pounds with a medium build. He was wearing a dark colored ski mask and a dark colored jacket and fled on foot.

Late into the afternoon police were still photographing and fingerprinting the crime scene, and canvassing the neighborhood for clues and witnesses.

Postal Inspector Bruce Hammerle says when they catch the man, he will face serious charges. "There are federal charges -- robbery of a postal facility with a weapon -- so there are federal charges that could apply in this case."

Hammerle says the U.S. Postal Service has a toll free number 877-876-2455 for tips on the crime. The number answers 24 hours a day, and you can remain anonymous.
