Chairs Parked For Canonsburg's July 4th Parade

CANONSBURG (KDKA) ― They are plastic, vinyl, lawn and lounge and they aren't going anywhere.

Crooner Perry Como likely celebrated the red, white and blue in his hometown with that glorious tradition - both sacred and profane - the "Parking Chair."

The origins of the "Parking Chair" are lost in the mists of time.

"I love the chairs - again it shows community support and it shows people are really into this event," says parade Co-Chair Sean Terling.

The first chair appeared on Pike Street a week ago and according to Tom Shinshaski, "Nobody messes with it. All week -nobody messes with it."

The reviewing stand is going up. The swags and flags are at the ready. Canonsburg's nearly 9,000 citizens will swell to 20,000 tomorrow for the 47th Fourth of July Parade.

Bill Brooks came on board in 1969 because he could drive a standard shift convertible to ferry the beauty queens.

"One year I missed gear and the girl fell off - not on a road - on the boot you know in a convertible - some guy caught her," he recalled.

When these chairs fill-up, it will transform Canonsburg into a slice of Americana -the proverbial baseball, hotdogs and Chevrolet even in hard times.

"And people think that the parade's gonna be a little bit smaller this year - it's 145 units - it's bigger than it was last year. It's bigger than it has been for a while - and it's just great to see the community come out and really support the parade."
