The Rose Test: Picking The Best Bouquet

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― With Valentine's Day fast approaching, many people buy roses for their loved ones.

But how do you know if you're getting your money's worth?

KDKA's Keith Jones put florists to the rose test.

Our resident flower expert Post-Gazette Garden Editor Doug Oester offered his opinion as to quality when it comes to dot-coms and local florists.

We dialed up two local stores on a Friday for a Monday delivery.

We ordered six long stem red roses from Gida's on Forbes Avenue and from Northside Floral Shoppe on Smallman Street.

Then we hit the keyboard.

We started with well known FTD, which we found out, uses Gida's for its deliveries.

The other dot-com we used was Pro-Flowers.

It claims to have the freshest flowers because they ship directly from the grower.

Who did we judge to be the best?

Doug's pick were the ones from the Northside Floral Shoppe.

He said the flowers had "big beautiful blooms"

They also held up the best of all our samples.

As far as price is concerned, the least expensive was the bouquet from Gidas at $39.58.

The most expensive was the FTD bouquet, which was actually made at Gidas, at $65.98.

So clearly, it's cheaper to call a local florist directly, rather than paying an extra $25 to have someone do it for you.
