Keeping Your Valentine's Flowers Looking Fresh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Flowers are among the most popular ways to show your Valentine that you care; but those bouquets can come with a big price tag and may only last a few days.
But there are some ways to help keep your blooms looking fresh.
Post-Gazette Gardening Columnist Doug Oster says the most important thing to do is to make a fresh cut on the stems right away. By cutting a 45-degree angle about ½-inch up the stem, you'll let as much water in as possible to keep the flower hydrated.
It's a good idea to make a fresh cut every few days replacing the water each time you do so.
It's also important to make sure there aren't any leaves or other debris in the water, since they could cause bacteria to grow.
Those packets of fresh flower food will also help extend the life of your bouquet.
Another trick that Oster recommends is simply putting a penny in the water. "It stops bacteria from really taking over."
The type of vase that you choose will also make a difference. "The best vase is one that will keep the water as tall as possible," Oster explains, "because the water will be forced up toward the blooms."
