Leslie Bonci's Tips For Plastic Use

(KDKA) UPMC Dietician Leslie Bonci has put together a checklist about the right and wrong ways of using plastic in our kitchens.

Tips for Plastic Use

Concern is with BPA- Bisphenol A

To minimize exposure, do the following:
  1. Look at the recycling symbol on the bottom of plastic containers and avoid using those with the numbers 3,6,or 7. You will find this number imprinted in the middle of the triangle
  2. Toss out reusable, clear hard plastic water bottles after the first use- better yet, switch to a stainless steel water bottle
  3. Microwave foods using glass or glass ceramic dishes, NOT plastic
  4. Do not cover food with plastic wrap to microwave, use a paper towel, glass cover, waxed paper, or a hard plastic lid that is microwave-safe
  5. Wash plastic containers by hand as the heat of the dishwasher and the dishwasher detergent can break down the plastic
  6. Discard worn plastic containers
  7. Do not reuse soft plastic deli containers such as those that contain salads, cheeses, olives, etc, to store leftovers
  8. Watch canned foods, especially soups and canned pastas as the inside of the can is lined with plastic
  9. Wrap cheese and fatty meats such as hot dogs, lunch meats in foil or waxed paper, not plastic
  10. Use glass or glass-ceramic dishes to store leftovers, especially items that are acidic, or fatty such as meat dishes, creamy dishes, tomato based items
  11. Limit plastic container use to cold vegetables, salads, fruits, or better yet, use them to store non-food items such as loose change, nails, screws, beauty supplies
  12. Look for the BPA-free label on plastic plates, cups, utensils
