More Cabin Fever Cures

(KDKA) Author Carol Baicker-McKee, Ph.D. is offering more cures for cabin fever on Pittsburgh Today Live.

Make Something, But Not Too Big a Mess
  •  String or glue colored pasta (make it by combining pasta with small amount of colored water in a plastic bag)
  •  Indoor snowballs – Take an old pair of tights or pantyhose. Loosely stuff toe with fiberfill or wadded newspaper. Knot section, cut off – repeat.
  •  Drawing activities – wet chalk on construction paper, mural with a roll of paper, outline self-portrait
  •  Play in the "bean box" instead of sandbox

    Get Away!
  •  Pittsburgh places
  •  Library or a bookstore
  •  "Wonder" walks or yard for snow angel portraits
  •  "Just looking" shopping
  •  Specialty market, Laundromat, someplace out of your usual errand spots

Phone a Friend - Activities for your child to enjoy with a buddy:
  •  Pretending games. Try some different themes, like camping, shoe store, animal vet, under-the-sea, holidays like Halloween
  •  Put on a show – try homemade puppets (from paper bags, tongue depressors, paper plates, etc.). Or put on music to rehearse a dance or band recital
  •  Food fun – eat snack under the table, serve it on doll's dishes or from ice cube trays, make your own soup (bowl of broth or yogurt with add-ins)

    Play a Game
  •  Old fashioned party games, like Drop the Clothespin, Pin the Tail on the Donkey (or something else), beanbag toss
    • Simple card games – Concentration, Go Fish, War
    • Hand-clapping games
    •  More old-fashioned games, like Sardines, Button-Button, Duck, Duck, Goose.

      Deal with Sickos
    •  Special snugglies, like a soft blanket or fancy cup only used by someone sick.
    •  Medicine-taking tips (suck on a popsicle first, mix with chocolate syrup, etc.)
    •  Old-fashioned comforts – cool washcloths, hot water bottles, rocking and holding, reading books
    •  Cold Comforts – vaseline under nose and tissues with lotion, sneeze techniques (into elbows), increase moisture in air, lollipops, honey (for kids over 1 year).
