Beauty Editor's Picks: Do I Need That?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Is your current budget making you re-think the way you buy cosmetics? Here are a few ways to weed out what you need and don't until things return to normal.
1. Body lotion AND face lotion? Yes, you need need both. Body lotion is thicker and richer for the thicker skin on the body. Face lotions or creams are made lighter for the thinner skin on the face.
2. Day cream AND night cream? Yes. Day cream is made w/ lighter ingredients so it will not interfere w/ make-up during the day. Day products may also have an SPF that you do not need at night. Night creams are made heavier in some cases and may contain anti-aging ingredients that need to work while you sleep.
3. Eye cream AND lip cream? No, you can get by using eye cream for your lip line because the skin is similar in those areas. Do use a separate container(little pots can be found at a craft store) for your lips. Never transfer anything from your mouth to your eyes to prevent the spread of bacteria.
4. Eye make-up remover AND face make-up remover? Yes, do use a remover made for the eyes. You can get away with removing your face make-up w/ your facial cleanser if it is a gentle product by cleansing your face twice, once to remover the make-up, once to cleanse your skin.
5. Hand cream AND foot cream? No. The skin is thicker in both areas so you can use one or the other on each area. Just watch for any menthol in foot creams(to sooth sore feet) on your hands in case you would rub your eyes if using it for hand cream. Best buy for feet? Vaseline and wear socks to bed. (If you are a diabetic check w/ your doctor before trying anything for your feet or hands.)
6. Hand cream AND cuticle cream? No, you can massage a bit of hand cream or olive oil from your kitchen into each cuticle of your fingers.
7. Base coat for nails AND top coat? That depends.........You should use a base coat if you wear dark shades of nail polish, it will protect your nails from turning yellow. If you need a nail strengthening treatment you can use it as a base coat. Otherwise, skip the base coat and use a top coat that is a nail dry product to get shine and a faster dry time.
8. Nail clean-up product? No, use an orange wood stick(much cheaper to buy) w/ one end wrapped in a bit of cotton, then dip into nail polish remover to clean up any polish on the skin.
9. Scrubs for the face AND the body. Oh yes! The skin is thicker on the body so it can stand courser scrubs, so never use a body scrub on your face!!Also, You can get away with skipping foot and hand scrubs and use your body scrub on those areas, but never use anything but face scrubs on the face.
10. Lip liner pencils. You can only buy one? Get Sally Hanson's Invisible Lip Liner Pencil, it will go with every shade of lip color you have.
