Next month, slots will arrive in Washington County when the Meadows Racetrack opens its temporary casino.
But with the slots comes a slew of development to the area, but not everyone is excited.
Not far from the racetrack, a new Hampton Inn is under construction. Across the highway, a $300 million retail mall is taking shape in South Strabane. It will be one of two malls to open soon in that area of Washington County.
Newlyweds Justin and Carrie Bieranoski live in the Trotwood Acres development and their backyard overlooks the Meadows Racetrack.
"I'm a little skeptical right now, what's going to happen, with all the development back here, worried about what type of crowd it's going to bring," Justin said. "I'm hoping it will bring a quiet, more elderly crowd."
Other homeowners in the neighborhood echoed Justin's feelings excited about economic development but worried about what it will mean to them personally.
"Within time, we're not sure what's going to happen to our property value. We're not going to be here forever, at some point, we're going to sell our home," Lou Schinosi, of South Strabane, said.
Contractors are now working 16 hours a day to get the slots parlor ready. The facility will have test runs not open to the general public on June 1 and June 3 before its official opening on June 5.
