Driver Recounts Terrifying Brush With Boulders

HARMAR TWP. (KDKA) ― One lane of traffic is once again flowing on both the north and south bound lanes of Route 28 in Harmar Township.

Early Wednesday morning, huge boulders came crashing down onto the highway, shutting it down completely.

Bob Wilson was probably the first person to encounter the rockslide at around 3:45 a.m.

He explained what happened to KDKA's David Highfield.

"I entered what I thought was a little fog bank," said Wilson. "All of the sudden, it clears and right in front of me there were two boulders on the northbound lanes about the size of a Volkswagen -- each of them. I'm traveling about 55 miles per hour and I realize I'm pretty much in trouble. I have no way of stopping. Just by the luck of the draw and instincts, I happened to pass right between the boulders."

Wilson took a moment to compose himself and then turned around to warn other drivers by flashing his lights and waving his hands at on-coming traffic.

He saw two vehicles coming and they didn't stop.

A tractor-trailer slammed into the boulders and several cars behind were involved in chain-reaction crash.

No one was seriously injured.

Wilson said he feels lucky that he made it through.

"I looked over my left-hand shoulder and said 'My God, look at the mountain that came down," said Wilson.

Crews are working around the clock to remove debris and then to survey the rest of the hillside.
