Delivering Pizza Was Secondary For Shooting Victim
by Mary Robb Jackson
Braddock (KDKA) ―
An innocent pizza delivery ended in murder.
Monday night, pizza delivery driver Christopher Williams was shot after making a delivery to a family in Braddock.
Williams never made it back to his car.
Williams had been making deliveries for Vocelli's pizza since may. It was a second job.
Police told KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson that whoever shot Williams ran and never got what they were after. Williams still had $90 in his pocket.
Williams, a newlywed, delivered pizza on the side to help take care of his family.
Monday night at about 6:15 p.m., Charles Carey ordered two large pepperoni pizzas for his grandchildren. His wife, Mary, paid Williams for delivering them to their home at the corner of Camp Avenue and Second Street. The bill was $23. Then she closed the door.
"I heard this pow, pow," Charles Carey said. "It sounds too close. I said everybody get down on the floor."
"So I looked out of the window and I said, 'that's the pizza man's car there - the lights are still burning,' Carey said.
Williams, 36, was lying on the sidewalk. Someone had shot him in the head.
Two shots were fired, one shot hit him.
Williams worked for the Vocelli's outlet in Swissvale. He and his wife, Lydia, lived nearby on Whipple Street.
In October, they had a big church wedding. Lydia Williams said me that her husband gave her the fairytale wedding she'd dreamed of. His 12-year-daughter, Kayla, was there to celebrate with them.
Braddock Borough manager Ella Jones is devastated by what has happened.
Jones says that the neighborhood where Williams died has long been troubled by drug dealing.
"It has to change," Jones said. "In that particular area, there are a lot of problems there.
Obviously there more we need to look at."
Allegheny County police are following up on a number of leads, but have no new information to share at this time.
Vocelli's is offering a $2,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
