New Security Measures Take Effect At US Airports
Travelers are not permitted to take any liquids or gels in their carry on luggage
The only exception: baby formula, breast millk or juice for a small child and perscription medicine matching name on the traveler's ticket
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
In response to a thwarted terror plot in the UK, passengers at Pittsburgh International and other US airports can expect new security measures today.
As a precaution, the Transportation Safety Administration is making some changes to what airline passengers won't be allowed to take on the plane with them.
Until further notice, travelers will not be permitted to take any liquids, lotions or gels of any kind in their carry on bags with them.
According to the TSA website, "This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency."
The only exception to this new ban is baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling. The TSA says passengers will also be allowed to bring their prescription medicines with them -- provided the name on the prescription matches the passenger's ticket. Insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines will also be permitted.
Transportation officials say any beverages purchased at the airport "must be consumed before boarding."
To help ensure that passengers have a smooth trip, the US Department of Homeland Security has issued a guide for air travelers encouraging them to pack lightly, arrive early and cooperate with TSA workers.
