Man Discovers Reptile Floating In Yough River
ELIZABETH TWP. (KDKA) ―
One local man was on a leisurely fishing trip Sunday morning on the Yough River when he made a surprising discovery floating on the water.
Jeff Beatty, a local fisherman, was on his boat with his dog Zeus just under the Boston Bridge when they found what appears to be an alligator swimming in the waters.
"I didn't believe it," Beatty said. "Somebody said there's an alligator in the Yough River and I said no, and I went over and sure enough there it was."
Beatty, a veteran Elizabeth Township Police Officer, says the first thing that he saw were two eyes.
"The two sets of eyes on top of the water, and it just really didn't look like it was real, then sure enough the tail and the whole body and there it was," he reports.
Beatty says that's when he called 911, who then called the Fish Commission.
The four and a half to five foot long, 25 pound reptile was removed around lunchtime. Experts say that it could either be an alligator or a cayman.
"It was flipping around, hissing, and growling and they were able to tape it up and tied it down."
Some local residents said that they were surprised by the find and others said that it's just not that hard to believe.
"You've got to fear for your children," said Sean Tyrdovsky, of McKeesport. "People are dropping things in."
"We've seen piranhas caught, different kids of snakes, a few dead bodies." Said Ray Chandler, of Portvue. "We've seen a little bit of everything down here."
