Washington Temporarily Renames Town - Steeler, PA
by Mary Robb Jackson
WASHINGTON, PA (KDKA) ―
The city of Washington, the first surrounding county to name itself after General George W. Washington in 1781, has changed its name.
Until after the Super Bowl, Washington PA will be known as Steeler, PA.
On Thursday, a four-member city council voted unanimously to change the name of the town until after Super Bowl Sunday.
"We're Washington, Pennsylvania," said Ken Westcott, Mayor of Steeler, PA. "We're playing a team from the state of Washington so we wanted to show that the city of Washington supports our Steelers. We decided to make the name change to Steelers, PA".
A city with a population of 15,000, Steeler, PA was originally known as Bassett, prior to being renamed after George Washington.
"Being a football fanatic myself, along with most everybody in Washington it probably is a good idea," said Jim Ross of the Steeler Historical Society.
