A big-rig carrying hazardous materials and nine other vehicles crashed Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 5 northbound in the mountains of Kern County near Fort Tejon, authorities said.
There were reports from the scene of four fatalities and 27 injured, reports CBS station KPIX-TV.
California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Jobinger said the crash occurred in foggy conditions shortly before 1 p.m.
The crash was reported as a runaway truck striking the nine other vehicles on a stretch of downhill highway on the northern side of Tejon Pass, which rises to an elevation of more than 4,000 feet.
The crash created a miles-long backup on the northbound side of I-5, one of California's major routes for travel and truck traffic.
Traffic from Southern California towards the Central Valley was diverted at Lebec onto eastbound state Route 138 to Lancaster, and north into Bakersfield via routes 14 and 58.
Visibility was reported as low as 400 feet at the time of the accident.
