Lawrence Co. Receives Harness Racetrack License
HARRISBURG (KDKA/AP) ―
The state's final harness racing license has been awarded to a western Pennsylvania group that plans to develop a racetrack and casino in Lawrence County.
The announcement came this morning during a special meeting of the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission.
This decision has given the group that proposed Valley View Downs an inside track for a slots license.
The group said it has agreed to purchase 250 acres from Bedford Downs which had also been in the competition for the license.
Meanwhile, representatives from Bedford Downs say they plan to develop the surrounding real estate, but the group will not be a partner in the racing and gambling operations.
KDKA Political Editor Jon Delano spoke to all three Beaver County Commissioners via a conference call.
He reports all three commissioners were disappointed the race track would not be coming to South Beaver Township, near Routes 51 and 60, but they said the developer promised that many Beaver County residents would receive jobs at the new race track and casino.
