Pittsburghers Can Go To The 'Water's Edge'
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
After months of preparation, Pittsburghers will be able to go to the "Water's Edge."
The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium began its grand opening celebration for the new exhibit, which is the brand-new home for their two polar bear cubs.
"It's been almost two years in the making so it's so fabulous to actually see the bears come out and enjoy their exhibit," said Dr. Barbara Baker, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo.
Baker says the cubs arrived in June but went through a quarantine period.
The bears were introduced to the exhibit last week.
Although they were kept away from public view, Dr. Baker says they probably won't be too shy.
"These animals were born in captivity, they were born at the Denver Zoo, so they're very used to the public," she said. "That's one of the neatest things. They come right up to the windows, they come right up to see you."
Although they may look cuddly, Dr. Baker says polar bears are one of the most aggressive animals in the wild.
The zoo will be open Thanksgiving.
On Friday, visitors can celebrate the bears' second birthday.
