Local Man Captured In Moving Photo Of VT Shootings

(KDKA) It's an emotional picture capturing the horror of the violent shootings on Monday at Virginia Tech, and the man in that photo being carried by police is from Washington County.

He is identified as 22-year-old Kevin Sterne, of Eighty-Four, and though he is scheduled to graduate in a few weeks from Virginia Tech, he is instead recovering tonight from gunshot wounds in a Virginia hospital.

"He got shot twice in the upper thigh, one bullet went straight through, and the other one pierced his artery," says Suzanne Grimes, Sterne's mother.

Sterne's doctor told Grimes that her son tied a belt around his thigh as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, which helped to save his life.

And Sterne learned those life-saving techniques as an Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 13-13 in McMurray.

"I'm not surprised that he knew exactly what to do in that situation, again, it's kind of second nature, ingrained in our brain," says Michael Masilunas, another Eagle Scout.

Sterne's parents, who are in Virginia with their son during his recovery say they think it will take time for their son to come to grips with what happened.

"I really think that it has not all sunk into him yet," says Randy Sterne, Kevin's father. "He knows what happened, and is processing that."

Tonight Sterne's parents say he is doing as well as can be expected, under the circumstances.

He still has a bullet fragment still lodged in his thigh. Doctors say they don't know when or if they will be able to remove it.
