Students Hurt When Buses Collide On Parkway West

Three school buses carrying Midland Elementary-Middle School students collided on the way to a field trip

About 40 people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries

The superintendent says parents, grandparents and guardians can call the following hotline for updates: 724/643-8650.
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Some Beaver County students on their way to a field trip at the Carnegie Science Center -- instead had to make a trip to the hospital after their buses collided on the Parkway West -- near the ramp onto I-79.

State police say the buses hit into one another just after 9am near the Rosslyn Farms exit, injuring 42 people -- including both students and some adult chaperones.

A spokesperson at Mercy Hospital confirmed that they received 22 patients from the accident -- including 15 students and seven adults. Sixteen children were taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

All the injuries are believed to be minor.

Midland Borough School District Superintendent Dr. Nick Trombetta tells KDKA that about 150 students were on the buses at the time -- ranging from fourth- to eight-graders.

Trobetta says the injured students suffered bumps and bruises -- while a few youngsters complained of sore necks and backs.

The uninjured students were taken back to school.

The superintendent says they have set up a hotline for updates. Parents, grandparents and guardians can call 724/643-8650.

Dr. Trobetta told KDKA he and the school's principal were headed to the hospitals to check on their students.

According to preliminary reports, the first school bus apparently swerved to avoid hitting a tractor-trailer -- setting off the chain reaction crash.
