Sago Owner Announces 115 Citations

ICG didn't provide details of the alleged violations. However, the company says most were unlikely to cause injury.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (KDKA/AP) ― The owner of the Sago Mine says federal inspectors issued 115 citations for alleged problems found during an electrical spot inspection of the mine.

The inspection was part of an investigation into the Jan. 2 explosion at the Upshur County coal mine that resulted in the deaths of 12 miners.

International Coal Group said today that none of the alleged violations cited by the Mine Safety and Health Administration were related to the explosion. The company says it has corrected all but one alleged problem. ICG says it's reviewing that citation to determine if it should be challenged.

A spokesman for the federal agency confirmed that it cited the company and that, to his knowledge, most of the problems had been corrected.

According to the agency's Web site, the citations included ones involving maintenance and testing of electric equipment, and switches or other controls on electric equipment.
