Rappellers Remove Rock To Make Route 28 Safer

HARMAR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― Rockslide problems on Route 28 have workers rappelling down the hillsides along the roadway today.

Crews are scaling the hillsides to clean debris and improve safety.

The work is expected to last for about three weeks.

However, PennDOT officials don't expect the rock removal to completely solve the rockslide problems in the area.

"We know there's still going to be rock falls in the future," said Dan Cessna of PennDOT. "Our goal is to make it safer and not have the impact of traffic that we have had recently."

Drivers are urged to use caution while traveling along the area of Route 28 in Harmar Township.

PennDOT says the $5.1 million project also includes work to build a passing lane and shift the southbound lanes.

That work is expected to be completed by mid-October.

Officials say there are also plans to install a steel mesh fence this winter.
