Poker Run Raises Money For Wounded Soldier's Home
UNIONTOWN (KDKA) ―
Hundreds of bikers raised thousands of dollars to help build a home for a Coraopolis soldier who was severely injured in Iraq.
A group known as Homes For Our Troops is building the handicap-accessible home for James Fair, who lost his eyesight, both hands, suffered a brain injury and a severe leg injury when a makeshift bomb exploded.
The American Legion riders paid $10 each and road miles to help out Fair and didn't think twice about it. They rode from Uniontown to American Legion posts in Connellsville and Donegal.
"There's a veteran who's hurt, needs the help. We're going to help him," Tim Kautz, from Ruffsdale, said. "All veterans should be helped. The government hasn't done a real good job of helping the veterans so we'll do it ourself."
Fair is moved by the outpouring of support.
"It makes you realize that there are a lot of really nice people out there who actually care about other people and I feel it's a real nice gesture," he said.
The run was expected to raise more than $5,000.
