Polar Bears Get New Names With Pittsburgh Twist

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburghers across the area voted, the ballots are in, and today is the day the polar bear cubs at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium received their new names.

Zoo officials say they received more than 4,000 entries, which were submitted over the Internet.

And drum roll please…

The new names, with a Pittsburgh twist, are "Koda Rogers" and "Nuka McFeely."

The winning submission came from 87-year-old Rose Smith, of Whitehall, she received a behind the scenes tour of the zoo.

The polar bears' keepers and a committee of zoo employees took several weeks for their selection process.

Dr. Barbara Baker, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, says that it was not an easy task to sort through all the naming entries because they were all great ideas.
