Pittsburgh Zoo Welcomes New Additions

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― There are two new additions at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.

They are polar bear cubs named Koda and Nuka.

"As soon as they came out of their crates they were playing and went in the pool right away. I got a good sense that they were doing okay and were comfortable," said Amos Morris, Curator of Mammals at the zoo.

Right now the bears are being kept in a holding area, but come August be moved to a place called "Water's Edge."

It's a marine mammal facility for polar bears, sea otters and walruses.

Contractors are working to get the Polar Bear part of the exhibit completed before the summer's end.

For now, there's quite a bit of hammering, digging and drilling going on.

"As the days move on when they hear the new sounds that they are not familiar with, it'll take them a day or so to figure out that these sounds really don't -- are not going to disturb me and then they'll settle in," explained Morris.

If you love bears and just can't wait until August, this weekend, guests at the zoo will get a sneak peak of the two little guys at their annual gala.
