Get A Sneak Peek At The New Polar Bear Exhibit
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium will soon be showing off its newest residents two-year-old polar bear cubs.
The new exhibit is getting its finishing touches for the grand opening slated for the end of the month.
But KDKA's Alison Morris got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the project 14 months in the making.
Dr. Barbara Baker, President of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, says the exhibit starts in the tundra area.
Visitors will be able to see the bears nose-to-nose through viewing windows.
Then they can take a stroll down the Nature Trail, which has the bears' actual paw prints in the cement.
From there, visitors will wind their way through Pier Town, an interactive arctic village with views of the polar bears at play.
A window there has a half-view of the water, Baker says.
"So the polar bears can swim in the water, 4 feet up right up into the cannery and people can see them right there," she explained.
By the springtime, walruses and sea otters will be at the exhibit too.
Coming soon, you can get an exclusive look at the polar bears anytime by watching them on our webcam at KDKA.com.
