For months, talks went back and forth on whether a new arena for the Penguins would be built here in Pittsburgh, but today, the first steps to building that new structure were put in motion.
Demolition started today on the site of the Penguins' new arena. More than a dozen buildings in the area are being torn down in the Lower Hill District to make way for the new facility.
Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato says $26 million in state funds was used to buy land and pay for demolition around the site.
"We are at the beginning of a dynasty here," said Ken Sawyer, the Penguins' CEO. "We have the best young team in the hockey world, and we're going to have it for years to come. To have this happen as we open a new arena, it couldn't be better timing."
It will be built right across the street from the team's current home, Mellon Arena.
The architectural firm called HOK, which also worked on plans for PNC Park and Heinz Field, is working with Pens on the plans for the new multi-purpose arena.
The new arena will hold 18,500 seats, which is 1,500 more than Mellon Arena has now.
Local government officials were also on hand for the demolition, Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl both help get the crews started.
