Falcons Banded At Gulf Tower

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Peregrine Falcons were temporarily removed from nest at the Gulf Tower this morning.

The birds were brought indoors to be measured, examined and fitted with identification bands.

For the first time since a nesting site was established atop the Gulf Tower on Grant Street in 1991, a landmark number of five peregrine falcon chicks hatched this spring.

It brings the total number of successful hatchings to 55 since the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, its partners and volunteers built the nesting site.

Peregrine falcons are a protected species in Pennsylvania and are especially important because of their endangered status.
