For years, a lack of funding has delayed the completion of the Mon-Fayette Expressway.
But beginning today, that 35 year-old project has a renewed sense of hope thanks to a new funding source.
Work is set to begin on the Mon-Fayette Expressway that would finally connect Brownsville and Uniontown.
Phase one of the project in Redstone Township was started in February 2006.
Phase two will connect Brownsville from the Route 43 Turnpike to Redstone Township and eventually to Uniontown.
When the whole Fayette section of the expressway is complete, motorists will be able to drive from Interstate 68 in West Virginia to Allegheny County.
It has been a piece meal process, but it's finally moving forward.
"We are going to finish and start phase two that will give us and complete the 17 miles that's been so desperately needed between Uniontown and Brownsville along, obviously, with the new bridge that we're going to construct," said Joe Brimmeier, Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO.
The newest section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway is expected to be finished by 2011 or 2012.
