Meadows Horse-Racing Sees Bigger Winnings, Betting
HOUSTON (AP) ―
Racers, owners and others in the long-beleaguered horse-racing business are seeing rising profits and an influx of cash since slot machines began operating at The Meadows Racetrack And Casino.
The boost is largely a result of a law that diverts a percentage of each dollar lost at the slot machines to the horse gambling that has been foundering without a prop.
At a recent race this past week, 35-year-old driver Mike Wilder earned $385 for bringing his horse across the finish line in just under two minutes.
The total purse was more than $15,000 about 50 percent higher than it would have been a year ago.
The 43-year-old racetrack will also soon undergo a complete renovation that is expected to further boost profits.
