Cyril Wecht's Corruption Trial Set For January

PITTSBURGH (AP) ― The public corruption trial for former Allegheny County Coroner Cyril Wecht is scheduled to begin January 28th before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.

Wecht was indicted in January 2006 on 84 theft and fraud counts.

Federal prosecutors say he used his county staff to benefit himself and his private pathology practice.

Wecht has denied all wrongdoing.

The trial was supposed to be held in October 2006, but it has been delayed by various pretrial motions, including an effort to get much of the evidence thrown out.

A hearing is scheduled on that motion on September 18th, at which Wecht's attorneys will attack the disciplinary history of the lead FBI agent on the case.

They allege the agent had a history of doctoring reports and that evidence he compiled against Wecht is suspect as a result.
