Butler Woman Died Of Natural Causes, But...

by Mary Robb Jackson
CRANBERRY (KDKA) ― The Butler County coroner's office says an elderly woman found dead in a freezer earlier this month died of natural causes; but the district attorney may still file charges in the case.

The body of Bobbie Royer, 90, was found inside a freezer inside the Cranberry Township home that she shared with her son, Philip, 56.

While neighbors said that hadn't seen Mrs. Royer for about six months, officials say they may never be able to determine exactly when Bobbie Royer died because her body had been frozen.

Though no charges have been filed at this point, the Butler County DA's office is looking into whether someone may have continued to cash the woman's Social Security checks after her death.

"Obviously the discovery of the location of her body causes us concern," said Butler County District Attorney Randa Clark. "We're looking into the possibility of abusive corpse charges plus the fact there may be some financial aspects in the case."

According to the DA's office, charges including abuse of a corpse could be filed after an investigation.
