Police Probe Elderly Cranberry Woman's Death

CRANBERRY TWP. (KDKA) ― There are many unanswered questions over what happened inside a Cranberry home where an elderly woman was discovered dead.

Now, those circumstances may have a chilling twist.

Investigators are taking a closer look as to how 90 year-old Bobbie Royer died.

And one of the many questions being asked, was her body found in a freezer?

Our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are reporting that authorities are waiting to perform an autopsy until Royer's body can thaw out.

The Butler County District Attorney revealed what she could about this case.

"I can't say we're investigating a crime, but we're investigating the death for which we don't have a cause," said Randa Clark, the Butler County District Attorney. "Cranberry Township Police received a call to respond to that residence and her body was found. I'm comfortable releasing that information to you. As to who made the call, who initiated this, that will come out in due course."

KDKA's Ross Guidotti learned from neighbors that Royer's body was found "in a frozen state" and was removed in a plastic tub.

The District Attorney won't say if that's true.

"I would prefer not to answer those questions," said Clark.

Investigators say the woman's son, Philip Royer, was questioned but has not been charged with anything.

Neither has anyone else.

Clark agrees that there may not even be any crime involved in this.

"That's a possibility, although there are several questions left unanswered," she said.

Clark says she's not aware of any obvious signs of trauma to the body.

Preliminary autopsy results could be available on Monday.

Toxicology tests will take longer.

Neighbors say they hadn't seen Mrs. Royer for about six months.
