Group Plans Protest After Geese Harvesting
(KDKA)
A protest has been planned against Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato after nearly 300 Canadian geese were harvested at North Park last weekend.
Voices For Animals is reportedly planning a Sunday-morning protest outside of The Church of St. Cyril in Brighton Heights, where Onorato and his family attend. They accuse the county of breaking its promise to use non-lethal means of controlling the geese population.
"How does the slaughter of 272 wild birds comply with 'thou shalt not kill'? The slaughter of the North Park geese was unethical, inhumane, unnecessary, and runs counter to the teachings of some of the most respected spiritual leaders in history," the group said in a statement.
Onorato's spokesman Kevin Evanto has issued no comment on the protest. Onorato's is vacationing with his family in Italy and will not be in town Sunday morning.
Despite the negative backlash, Allegheny County Parks Director Andy Baechle thinks it was a necessary step to preserve the park.
"We came to the decision that we did have to do a one time check," said Baechle. "We didn't think that all the harassment alone would deal with the issue because it was so out of balance."
