Boscov's Stores Open In Two Locations
UPPER ST. CLAIR (KDKA) ―
Move over Macy's and Kohl's
There's some new competition in town.
Boscov's is here and the retailer rolled out the red carpet in Monroeville and South Hills Village to woo new shoppers.
KDKA's Kym Gable reports most people did come to shop but others came to scout things out and size things up not knowing what kind of retail experience to expect.
"Some people had an idea cause they do business in Harrisburg," said Boscov's store manager Archie Cumo. "In the eastern part of the state, we're strong, but the vast majority had no idea who we were."
Sure, there's a lot of fanfare at tonight's preview including live jazz music in the furniture department and even a browsing clown in housewares.
But when you get down to basics, even those still mourning the Kaufmann's closure were pretty pleased.
"I loved Kaufmann's," said shopper Nancy Haas. "I was thinking
not my Kaufmann's, but it's above Kaufmann's. I love the bargains today."
"I was expecting a little bit less than a Kaufmann's, but it's not so I'm excited," said JoAnne Hoff.
"I was looking for shoes and lots of things, found some wonderful things in the ladies department," said shopper Bonnie McClure. "This is really a neat store."
It's marketed as a value-priced department store with name brands and there's a focus on one stop shopping.
Boscov's carries items competitors don't like toys for your kids, candy for your sweet tooth and enough black and gold to keep hubby awake and content.
"Most of the guys are here in the Steelers area," said shopper Bob Kacinko. "You know what, I haven't seen a selection like this outside of a Steeler store. It's really amazing."
And managers say they're confident even when that amazement wears off the loyalty will kick in.
"I think they're pleased with the assortment and they'll be back," said Cumo.
Boscov's already has stores in Monaca, Butler and Johnstown.
