Campaign Aims To Get Pittsburghers Movin'

KDKA is the proud media sponsor of "America On The Move," a national effort geared to improve residents' health and quality of life

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Exercise is obviously key to losing weight; but experts say the only way to get and stay healthy is to make a real lifestyle change; now a community-wide initiative is trying to get Pittsburghers moving!

Pittsburgh and dozens of other US cities have joined "America On The Move," a national effort geared to improve residents' health and quality of life.

"For the most part, Pittsburgh's a pretty unhealthy city at this point – about the ninth unhealthiest of its size in the country," Dr. John Jakicic told KDKA.

Dr. Jakicic spearheaded the research for America On The Move.  "We've set a goal: to lay the claim that Pittsburgh is going to be the healthiest city in America."

The effort is not meant to get fit people healthier. "This is about taking the people who don't do much and giving them something to do," Jakicic added

Dr. Jakicic says it's as easy as moving more and eating less.

"It's as simple as adding about 2,000 steps a day to your lifestyle," he adds. "It's as simple as cutting back about 100 to 200-calories a day – that'll actually help to curb weight gain and probably start to promote weight loss!"

As part of the project, a website has been set up with tools to help participants change their lifestyles.

The site will encourage people to record the number of steps they walk each day and feature tips and advice on incorporating exercise into their daily routines.
