Statement From The Family Of The Late Ernie Holmes

The Holmes family is deeply sadden concerning the lost of Dwight White. My dad loved Dwight like a brother as they solidified the right side of the Curtain.

Dwight and I spoke briefly at my dad's funeral. It was good to see him. He looked great and told me a couple of funny stories about my dad. Just what I need at the time, but that's Dwight.

My dad once told me that he was most impressed with Dwight's tenacity. Dwight never took a play off and always keep his motor running. Dwight was a great teammate and friend.

Sincere Condolences

I start this "Diary" w/memories of Dwight White, a Pittsburgh Steeler, who played as number 78. The reason I write about him is I spent a very short part of the evening w/him @ a "Silent auction" in benefit of PA Women Work in late 2006; me & Dwight walked around looking @ the items up for auction; he put a bid on a clock, a very unique clock. Several items he told me I could have something, if his bid won. For example, they had another item w/the clock, I don't even remember what now, & he said the clock was his, but I could have the item that went w/it, laughing. I joked back that I'd arm wrestle him for the clock! He got a kick out of that. We laughed a lot as we looked @ the items, he made it fun, despite the fact I could not bid on even the lowest priced item.

At first, I was intimidated, & thought he would find a way to get away from me, but he was very down to earth, very easy to talk to, and truly made the evening nice for me. I spoke @ this function, ever so briefly, & that is how I met him. He wanted to meet the lady who was a Rail Road Conductor. When we shook hands, I told him if he did not let go, I would not be able to do my job anymore, lol! My hand disappeared in his, & he had quite the grip!

A perfect gentleman, a family man, who was kind to a lady who knew very few people; had no money to bid on anything & instead of leaving me to stand about treated me like a human being. I will never forget your interest in me as a person, & for making that short time a lot of fun. Thank you, Dwight, for being like an old friend. I pray you rest in peace. My very sincere condolences to your family; & to us all. We have lost a truly fine human being w/your passing; a much, much too early passing.

August Wilson Center Mourns the Loss of Dwight White

Statement From Neil Barclay, President and CEO of the August Wilson Center:

"The Board and staff of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dwight White, who along with his wife Karen, has been a long-standing supporter and friend of the Center since its inception."

"Most recently, as co-chairs of the Center's ongoing Capital Campaign, Mr. and Mrs. White have been extremely instrumental in our efforts to raise more than $28 million toward the construction of the new facility. Dwight's enthusiasm, dedication and commitment played an integral role in the success of the Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

He Was A Great Man Who Will Be Missed

Our hearts go out to the family of Dwight, who we loved like a brother, to his wife, and daughter. My brother Jim Wright had just received a phone message from big D a few weeks ago, stating he was going into the hospital for back surgery and would talk to him after he was out. We were friends and talked once in awhile about the good old Steeler days and all the positive things he was involved in after football in many of our communities. He was a great man, and will be missed by many of his friends that will never be known by his family. He was loved and respected in many circles of Pittsburgh life, and I want his family to know Dwight was very much in our hearts.

God Bless and Keep Us All
-- John P Wright, and family

One Of The Nicest Athletes I Have Ever Met

I had the opportunity to meet Dwight White a couple of years ago at a bar in Station Square. I got a chance to talk football with him for a while. He was very personable and one of the nicest athletes that I have ever met.  He was very friendly to me. I also have great memories of him as a player as he was a key component on the Steelers 4 Super Bowl teams. -- Jeff Scalo

Steeler Nation Mourns Loss Of A Great Man

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato today issued the following statement on the passing of Dwight White:

"Today, all of Allegheny County and the entire Steeler Nation mourn the loss of a great athlete and a great man. I first watched Dwight White as a fan in the 1970s, and I later came to know him professionally. His dedication to our community was as strong as the Steel Curtain. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

We've Lost An Important Member Of The Steelers Family

Steelers President Art Rooney II on the Death of Dwight White:

We have lost an important member of the Steelers family in Dwight White. His sudden death is a shock to us all. He was a dear friend.

Dwight should be remembered by fans as a great football player, one who perhaps did not receive the accolades he deserved for helping make the Steelers truly a national team. He always seemed to rise to the occasion when it counted most, and added an element of toughness that was synonymous with our teams of the 1970s.

We all knew him as "Mad Dog", but Dwight was a caring person who was very active in local charities. He also had a special gift that enabled him to liven up any room that he entered. Our prayers go out to Dwight's family at this extremely difficult time. They will remain a member of the Steelers family, just as Dwight will always be in our thoughts.
