Chiefs Upset Steelers 27-24 In Overtime

MORE: Pittsburgh Steelers News

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KDKA/AP) ― The Steelers went into Kansas City looking to rebound after a divisional loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last week; instead, the black and gold were upset by the Chiefs in overtime.

Ryan Succop's 22-yard field goal with 8:28 left in the overtime period lifted the Chiefs to the come-from-behind 27-24 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Steelers, with Charlie Batch replacing a shaken-up Ben Roethlisberger in overtime, had to punt on their first possession.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger's injury was a "concussion-oriented thing."

Roethlisberger apparently took a knee to the helmet while being sacked by Derrick Johnson. Tomlin said after the game that he was not certain how severe the injury might be.

The Chiefs faced third down when Matt Cassel connected with Chris Chambers, who went 61 yards before he was pushed out of bounds at the four, which led to Succop kicking the game winner.

"It's a tough loss," said Steeler Casey Hampton. "You know, you come in here, as we go anywhere – we feel like we're going to win, and to lose against anybody is just tough. We're gonna regroup, we're gonna be alright. I have no doubt in my mind we're gonna be alright."

The Steelers dominated the first half of the game by holding the Chiefs to just 47 total yards of offense.

Kansas City's lone bright spot in the first half came on the opening kickoff of the game when Jamaal Charles returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to take a very early lead.

It was the fourth time this season that the Steelers have allowed a kick return for a touchdown.

But Jeff Reed's 36-yard field goal early in the second quarter cut the Chiefs' lead to 7-3.

And Roethlisberger led the Steelers down the field in the second quarter twice for touchdowns to take a 17-7 lead at the half.

On the first one, he hooked up with Hines Ward for an eight-yard touchdown to put Pittsburgh ahead 10-7.

With less than two minutes to play, Roethlisberger somehow avoided a sack and dumped a pass on the run to Heath Miller for a 10-yard score.

But in the third quarter, Roethlisberger was picked off twice.

On the opening drive of the second half, Miller saw a ball bounce out of his hands and fall into the arms of the Chiefs, who took full advantage of the turnover.

Matt Cassel found his tight end Leonard Pope for a 21-yard touchdown pass with less than 11 minutes to play in the third quarter to pull within three points at 17-14.

The second interception came in the end zone when Andy Studebaker jumped the route and took off the other way for a 94-yard return.

The Chiefs couldn't punch it in the end zone and had to settle for a Succop chip shot to tie the game at 17-17.

The Steelers did reclaim the lead in the fourth quarter though after recovering a fumble deep in Kansas City territory.

Rashard Mendenhall scored on an eight-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to put Pittsburgh ahead 24-17.

However, the Chiefs tied it at 24-24 with a Matt Cassel pass to Charles for a touchdown – the score that sent the game into overtime.

In regulation, the Steelers had the ball for almost 19 minutes longer than the Chiefs and out-gained them 463-206. But the early kickoff return touchdown and interception return kept the Chiefs in the game.

The Steelers were without injured Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu and guard Chris Kemoeatu also went out during the game with a knee injury.

After losing two in a row, the Steelers head into Baltimore for a showdown with the rival Ravens.
