Asteroid Named In Honor Of Myron Cope

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― A new tribute to Myron Cope is honoring the late broadcaster far beyond the borders of the Steelers Nation and out among the stars.

An asteroid that orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter has been officially named after Cope.

The International Astronomical Union gave their approval and the name became official late last month.

The idea was proposed by a Bethel Park native working for the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Massachusetts.

The asteroid, now known as "7835 Myroncope," is small and doesn't get close enough to Earth to be seen by the naked eye.
