Terrible Towel Dissed At Rally In Phoenix
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
For the Steeler Nation, the Terrible Towel is their flag and the most dedicated of fans have taken an oath, if only in their hearts, to preserve, protect and defend that flag.
So to mess with the towel is to declare war on the Steeler Nation.
"Whether you stomp on it, or disgrace it, whatever you do you're gonna lose," warns Jennifer Jack. "So Phoenix don't do it!"
Oh, but they did! At a pep rally in Arizona, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon threw the Terrible Towel on the ground as fans chanted, "Burn it!"
Even Cardinals mascot Big Red took the disgrace one step further and did the unspeakable act of wiping his underarms with it!
"It's low class. It's not - you don't need to do that kind of stuff. I understand trying to get your team pumped up but you don't need to step over that boundary," adds Ed Palilla.
And Steeler Nation will warn future opponents, dishonoring the Terrible Towel is the kiss of death.
Just ask Tennessee Titans LenDale White and Keith Bullock.
Mysteriously after they stomped on The Towel and went on to beat the Steelers, they haven't won a game since. And now they're sitting at home watching the Black and Gold in the Super Bowl.
And the Bengals just haven't been the same since receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh wiped his feet with the towel in 2005.
And now, Steelers fans are warning those who dare try and replicate the power of the towel.
"Everyone's trying to have Terrible Towels and it's not gonna work because they're not Pittsburgh. So don't mess with us," says Jack.
In the words of Myron Cope: "The towel is a positive force that lifts the Steelers to magnificent heights and poses mysterious difficulties for the Steelers' opponents only if need be."
