As if the wave of gold in their home stadiums isn't enough, some teams just have to learn the power of the Terrible Towel the hard way.
Such is the story of the Tennessee Titans.
"I need to know about the mystery of this Terrible Towel," Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said. "Last December a couple of my knuckleheads stomped on it and we haven't won a game since."
Fisher may believe in the curse of the Terrible Towel, but earlier this season, LenDale White clearly didn't.
"If it ain't a Tennessee Titan or a USC University of Southern California towel, I will stomp it," he said.
Five losses later, White has learned some respect and so has his co-stomper Keith Bulluck.
The Titan-signed Terrible Towel arrived at the Allegheny Valley School, home of the Terrible Towel.
"LenDale and Keith wish you all the best. P.S., please release the curse," a note included with the autographed towel said.
But in the Titans locker room, Bulluck and White said they signed the towel for the school, not the curse.
"No we didn't do it for them to get the curse off our backs, we did it for the cause so Steeler nation keep hating baby," Bulluck said. "We respect you."
"We do lift the curse hopefully that will help," Amy Harvilla, from Allegheny Valley School, said.
While she admits she doesn't have the power to do so, Ricky Rawlings, a 31-year resident at the school, believes he does.
"I do, I do," he said. "But I don't think it's going to happen this year."
"I'm going to tell you truthfully, I don't like the Titans," he added. "I don't like them."
The Titans are going to start quarterback Vince Young on Sunday as they host Jacksonville (3-3).
We'll have to wait and see if their act of reluctant contrition has any impact.
