Full Drills Underway At Steelers' Training Camp

UNITY TWP. (KDKA) ― The Steelers are set to begin the third day of training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin hasn't wasted any time bringing out the big drills.

Monday, the drill everyone likes to see was held -- the backs versus the backers.

It's a hard-hitting drill that gets right into the action on first day of full practice.

Probably the best part of the backs versus the backers was number one draft pick Rashard Mendenhall, proving his reputation as a solid blocker.

He got words of praise on the field but Coach Tomlin says he needs to see more of that from Mendenhall in the weeks to come.

"I'm not going to pat him on the back just yet," said Tomlin. "Guys are probably being nice to him since it's day one since he's new to the drill but he did give a good representation of himself. He's a competitor. We expect big things from him."

There are a few injury notes from Monday's practice.

In terms of defensive backs, Bryant McFadden and Anthony Smith are day-to-day.

Both are out with groin injuries.

Chris Kemoeatu is out with a tricep injury for a couple more days as well.

Meanwhile, Casey Hampton and Troy Polamalu are also sitting out the practices.

Polamalu has a minor hamstring injury.

Hampton remains on the physically unable to perform list due to his weight.

It's a two-a-day practice day once again and the second practice of the day at 2:55 p.m. will be open to the public.
